Plaited Cable Scarf

Plaited Cable Scarf
I have written out the instructions for the first pattern I have designed myself. It’s very basic, and I sure something very similar if not exactly the same has been designed before. I wanted something a little more interesting to knit than the Irish Hiking Scarf which I frogged. (It was a yarn issue, not a pattern issue).

Since I was starting over anyway, I looked at some stitch pattern books and came up with my own design. Its simple enough for a first cable project, easy to memorize, interesting to knit since you still have to think a little even when it is memorized and looks complicated to non-knitters. I personally like to use a cable needle, and feel it is less fussy than cabling without a needle. I used a dpn instead of a cable needle for the Coronet Hat below, but it kept slipping out, so I tried the cable needle this time and like it better.

Here is the down and dirty instructions which will probably suffice for someone who has knit cable before (they probably don’t need the pattern anyway). Here is a link to more instructions as a .pdf. The .pdf includes a chart and written instructions that will hopefully help someone who has never cabled before. The chart was written in excel, and although it is probably not “standard” knitting chart symbols, I think it is completely understandable. If not, just let me know!

Plaited Cable Scarf (Note Corrections Posted on 12/4 I forgot one of the Cables on rows 3 and 7) The chart on the .pdf has been correct.

Needle: Denise size 6 US ( I knit loose and like a firm fabric, use your instincts to decide if its right for you), cable needle or dpn
Gauge: not important, but your swatch is you first 8 rows, if you don’t like how it looks, rip and change needle size

I absolutely LOVE the braided cable in the middle.
I have a cable fetish, so it’s always nice to come upon nice designs (and yeah, I got bored with the Irish Hiking Scarf too… so mine because a patch for a blanket instead of a scarf.
I found you from the ISE Blog btw.

Love the Cable Scarf. I’ve made two of the Irish Hiking scarves already but need to make several more cabled scarves, and I think I will make this one next. I also came across you through a link to the ISE blog.

    Hi,

I know it’s years since you posted this but it’s exactly what I needed and your explanation is brilliant in it’s clarity - I’m about to try and reproduce my favourite (now dying) jumper and I’ve been looking for a pattern for the sleeve cables for ages.

    Thank you!
